As retail stores closed, consumers took to online retailers like Amazon, Walmart, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-on-ebay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eBay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to shop for essential items&mdash;and some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/holiday-shopping-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not-so-essential<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> items, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While retail stores are beginning to open back up to eager in-store shoppers (great news for local small businesses), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/consumer-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly half of consumers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say they would be fine if they never shopped in a physical store again. This, of course, is great news for ecommerce sellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two ecommerce platforms in particular will continue to take off in popularity in 2021 and beyond: Amazon and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/walmart-ecommerce-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walmart Marketplace<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39% of Amazon sellers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/amazon-seller-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">considering selling<\/a> on Walmart in 2021&mdash;should you?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we will review both the differences and similarities between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/how-to-sell-on-amazon-fba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling on Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-on-walmart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling on Walmart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine which is the best option for your business.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Differences between Selling on Amazon &amp; Selling on Walmart<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Difference #1: Seller competition&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is much easier to register for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-seller-registration-create-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon seller account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-on-walmart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart seller account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Amazon, anyone can register to sell and have a product listed within a few days. By contrast, you need to apply and be approved before you can sell on Walmart.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, Walmart&rsquo;s requirements to sell are much stricter than Amazon&rsquo;s. To apply for a Walmart seller account, you must have a registered business in your state, as well as a US Business Tax ID (your SSN will not be accepted as it would be on Amazon.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the extra hurdles you have to jump through to sell on Walmart, there are fewer sellers to compete with. Walmart.com currently has around 33,000 sellers, versus Amazon&rsquo;s 2 million sellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Walmart, because Walmart Marketplace is less saturated, their sellers receive roughly 13 times more monthly visitors than Amazon sellers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Winner: Walmart<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Difference #2: Monthly subscription fees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon has two different <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/individual-vs-professional-seller-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to choose from when registering for an account&mdash;individual or professional. While the individual account is free to maintain, you are still charged $0.99 per product sale, and you can&rsquo;t run <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-advertising-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PPC advertisements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or compete for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-win-the-buy-box\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy Box<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend Amazon sellers sign up for the professional account, as it offers more features than the individual plan, and more opportunities for success. The catch is that professional accounts come with $39.99 monthly fees. This may sound like a lot at first, but it&rsquo;s worth it considering the benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart Marketplace, on the other hand, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> charge sellers a monthly subscription fee.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart charges sellers just a fixed referral fee per sale (typically 15% of the product&rsquo;s sale price), plus fulfillment fees if you are using Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Winner: Walmart<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Difference #3: Selling fees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to Amazon and even eBay, Walmart&rsquo;s selling fees are much more straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Walmart Fees:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned above, Walmart does not charge a monthly subscription fee to sell on their platform. On top of that, they have a simple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sellerhelp.walmart.com\/s\/guide?article=000006011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">referral fee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> structure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most categories, you can expect to pay 15% of the sale price on each product sold through the marketplace. If you are fulfilling the orders yourself, then you&rsquo;ll only have to worry about paying the referral fee (you&rsquo;ll handle your own shipping costs.) No other hidden or complicated fees to understand.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you are using WFS (Walmart&rsquo;s equivalent to Fulfillment by Amazon), you will be on the hook for additional fees associated with this service. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sellerhelp.walmart.com\/seller\/s\/guide?article=000009214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> WFS is a competitive and cost-effective solution that will save sellers on fulfillment costs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Walmart does not share their fulfillment fee structure, they state that the storage and fulfillment fees are based on the weight and dimensions of your product alone.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Amazon Fees:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Walmart, Amazon charges a referral fee for each item sold. That fee also comes out to 15% for most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-product-categories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">categories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Amazon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon also allows sellers to choose between fulfilling orders themselves or paying Amazon to handle fulfillment (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-fba-vs-fbm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FBM and FBA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respectively). The major difference between Walmart&rsquo;s fees and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-fba-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon&rsquo;s fees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes down to whether sellers choose FBA. Using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/hz\/fba\/profitabilitycalculator\/index?lang=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon&rsquo;s FBA Revenue Calculator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I can enter that price to see how the fees are broken down for both Fulfillment by Merchant and Fulfillment by Amazon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The total cost for &lsquo;Your Fulfillment&rsquo; (FBM) does not include shipping. If you choose to sell FBM, you will have to factor in shipping expenses when determining your profit margin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-85077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/amz-v-walmart_fees.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"748\" height=\"1048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/amz-v-walmart_fees.png 748w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/amz-v-walmart_fees-214x300.png 214w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/amz-v-walmart_fees-731x1024.png 731w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 748px) 100vw, 748px\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selling via FBM, the only fees you would be responsible for are the &ldquo;Selling on Amazon fees&rdquo;, which includes &lsquo;Amazon Referral Fee&rsquo; and the &lsquo;Variable Closing Fee.&rsquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FBA sellers are also responsible for these two fees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of the Selling on Amazon fees, FBA sellers are also required to pay a &lsquo;Fulfillment by Amazon fee&rsquo; that is calculated based on the weight and dimensions of your product. This fee covers &lsquo;Monthly Storage&rsquo; and &lsquo;Fulfillment.&rsquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To sell Jungle Stix with FBA, Amazon charges us $9.02 per sale (not including monthly storage fees.) If we sold this product through FBM, we would pay Amazon just $4.49 (not including shipping costs to the customer.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Additional fees:<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly storage fee: Amazon will charge sellers at the end of each month based on the amount of inventory in an Amazon warehouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term storage fee: Amazon conducts inventory clean-ups on the 15th day of each month. During the clean-up, Amazon records any products that have sat in their fulfillment centers for 180 days or longer, and then charges sellers $6.90 per cubic foot of storage used. Products that have been in Amazon&rsquo;s warehouses for longer than 365 days incur a charge of $0.15 per unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refund administration fee: If you refund a shopper for a product for which you have already been paid, Amazon will refund you the amount of the referral fee you paid,&nbsp; minus the refund administration fee, which is either $5.00 or 20% of the applicable referral fee, whichever is less.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Winner: Walmart<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Difference #4: Business requirements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned above, the competition amongst sellers is a lot steeper on Amazon than on Walmart. Registration eligibility requirements have a lot to do with that discrepancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace-apply.walmart.com\/?__hstc=51647990.574aec34ba5b39c552f745cc82f94e52.1586230437582.1586793952344.1586803467414.12&amp;__hssc=51647990.7.1586803467414&amp;__hsfp=1345623360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Walmart Requirements<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart is not a beginner-friendly marketplace. You must be an established business in order to apply. Here are the qualifications and documents you&rsquo;ll need to register:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Business Tax ID (SSN not accepted)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W9 or W8 and EIN Verification Letter from the Department of Treasury that verifies your US business address or place of physical operations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Address or place of physical operations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US Business address<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned integration method for your product catalog (bulk upload, API, solution provider)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primary product categories, catalog size, and related information (e.g. total SKUs you will be selling on Walmart.com initially with verified UPC information and used vs. refurbished etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of now, Walmart will only allow businesses registered in the US to apply to sell on the marketplace. We are not sure when or if Walmart plans on changing this in the future.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart also has strict product requirements when using WFS:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products must ship to Walmart fulfillment centers from within the United States<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No perishable or regulated products&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximum product weight is 30 lb<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximum product dimensions: 25&Prime;x20&Prime;x14&Prime;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sell.amazon.com\/beginners-guide.html?ld=RPUSSOA-JungleScout-44147926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Amazon Requirements<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is much easier for brand new, inexperienced sellers to get set up and begin selling products on Amazon. You don&rsquo;t even need to know what you&rsquo;re going to sell before opening the account.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to complete your registration, make sure you have access to the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank account number and bank routing number<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chargeable credit card<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government-issued national ID<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tax information (you may use your SSN here)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phone number<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Walmart, international sellers (from select countries) are allowed to register to sell on Amazon.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Amazon, you need to be resident in one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/external\/200405020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be eligible to sell. International sellers also must have a valid phone number and an internationally chargeable credit card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Winner: Amazon<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Difference #5: Personalized account management<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A huge benefit to selling on Walmart and using WFS is that Walmart provides sellers with personalized support and a WFS fulfillment expert for recommendations on business optimization and growth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want that kind of dedicated support from Amazon, you&rsquo;ll need to fork over a hefty monthly fee ($1,600\/month), plus a percentage of your sales.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Winner: Walmart&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Difference #6: Customer base<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon has a firmer grip on consumers and a wider reach than Walmart.com&mdash;at least for now<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/amazon-vs-walmart-sales\/\">65% of U.S. consumers<\/a> currently shop on Amazon, which is nearly double the 37% of consumers who currently shop on Walmart.com. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon has amassed over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/271450\/monthly-unique-visitors-to-us-retail-websites\/#:~:text=In%20the%20United%20States%2C%20Amazon,terms%20of%20revenue%20and%20reach.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">200 million visitors<\/a> per month just in the US, which of course is a big reason why it is the largest online marketplace for sellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Walmart&rsquo;s online customer base continues to grow every year. Its customer reach increased 13% in just the past three months, up from 35% of Americans in Q4 of 2020 to 40% in Q1 of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart states that its online marketplace receives up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.walmart.com\/our-story\/our-business#:~:text=Our%20largest%20website%2C%20Walmart.com,and%20is%20growing%20every%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 million unique visitors a month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so you can be sure there&rsquo;s no shortage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/millennial-shopping-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shoppers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For shoppers, it comes down to preference&mdash;some would rather order from Amazon, others from Walmart. Now that both Amazon and Walmart offer online grocery delivery services, customers don&rsquo;t need to leave their homes to buy food. Over half have three or more years of experience under their belts, and 87% consider themselves at either &ldquo;intermediate&rdquo; or &ldquo;advanced&rdquo; level of expertise as Amazon sellers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their profitability metrics speak to their success: 84% bring in monthly sales of $1,000 or more, and 52% have achieved lifetime sales over $100,000.
