{"id":25247,"date":"2020-06-12T16:15:17","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T21:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/?p=25247"},"modified":"2023-04-26T15:30:31","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T20:30:31","slug":"amazon-prime-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-prime-members\/","title":{"rendered":"What Sellers Need to Know About Amazon Prime Members"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you sell Amazon Prime then you know how important Amazon&rsquo;s Prime membership is to the success of your business.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 58% of all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/consumer-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. consumers subscribing to Prime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*, selling Prime means you have a massive ready-to-buy audience at your disposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, to help you better understand Amazon consumers, we&rsquo;re looking at the collective mindset of Amazon Prime&rsquo;s uniquely loyal buyers and comparing it to that of Amazon&rsquo;s non-Prime customers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Prime members have a close affinity with Amazon<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime members are Amazon loyalists.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84% of Amazon Prime members said they value being able to shop on Amazon (compared to 52% of non-Prime members).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they could only ever shop from a single store, 67% of Prime members said they would choose Amazon (compared to 32% of non-Prime members who said the same).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And 85% of Amazon Prime members plan to keep their Amazon Prime subscriptions for at least another three months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#d0d0d0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>For Amazon sellers<\/strong>, <em>these statistics demonstrate the importance of <\/em><\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-on-amazon-prime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling on Amazon Prime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Having access to a group of faithful Amazon buyers only demonstrates the growing opportunity of selling on Amazon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><b>And Prime members are becoming increasingly loyal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the start of COVID-19, many shoppers (66% of Prime members and 33% of non-Prime members) have developed a greater appreciation for Amazon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, 8% of all U.S. consumers subscribed to Amazon Prime since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And more than twice the number of Prime members (68%) said that Amazon gave them access to products they couldn&rsquo;t get elsewhere during this time. But non-Prime members are less reliant on the platform, with just 32% saying Amazon offered them what others stores couldn&rsquo;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, Prime members like Amazon so much that, with respect to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/preparing-for-amazon-prime-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Prime Day 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 60% of them say they&rsquo;re already planning to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-seller-holiday-calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shop on that day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The positive feelings Prime members have for Amazon don&rsquo;t just end there though.&nbsp; More Prime members (82%) think Amazon is a good company for consumers, too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Prime members aren&rsquo;t quite as sold on the company, though, with 60% saying Amazon is good for shoppers&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>So, who are these Amazon Prime shoppers?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Amazon Prime caters to a younger consumer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Prime memberships are more common among younger people, with two<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in every three American consumers between ages 18 and 35 having an Amazon Prime membership.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Amazon Prime memberships by age:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;18-24: 64% of consumers currently have an Amazon Prime membership<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25-34: 68%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35-44: 63%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45-54: 59%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55-64: 47%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65-74: 44%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75+: 28%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Amazon Prime: a luxury item?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a cost of $119 per year, an Amazon Prime membership may be a bigger cost for some consumers than others. And p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rime members do appear to have greater financial means than non-Prime members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, while 24% of Prime members reported a household income of $100,000 or more per year, only 9% of non-Prime members said they brought in that amount annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25258 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-luxury-subscription.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-luxury-subscription.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-luxury-subscription-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-luxury-subscription-1024x408.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-luxury-subscription-1536x612.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Prime members shop on Amazon more often than non-Prime members: 49% of members shop at least once a week compared to 13% of non-members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&rsquo;re also willing to spend more. In fact, 67% of Amazon Prime members said they would spend more than $100 on a product listed on the site.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, only 41% of non-Prime members said they would be willing to spend that much on a single item.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#d0d0d0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<p><b>For Amazon sellers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that means you may want to look into selling <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/external\/G201620110?language=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save-and-subscribe products<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or, maybe you could <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/advanced-amazon-customer-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">add (more) complementary extras<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to your current line-up. You could even increase your maximum product price point during your <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/features\/product-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product research<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Amazon Prime Member Spending Patterns<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Prime members look for good reviews and expedited shipping<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Prime members, the number one consideration when looking for a product is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/features\/launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (83%). Finding the lowest price is a close second, at 80%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime members want to find the best product with the best reviews for the lowest price.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For non-Prime members, it&rsquo;s the reverse. Their number one consideration when looking for a product is price (70%), while products with the best reviews aren&rsquo;t far behind (at 67%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Prime members are willing to sacrifice a bit of social proof for the sake of a lower price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for why they use e-commerce, Prime members say they shop online because they:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/fast-shipping-ecommerce-conversions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fast shipping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (say 49% of Prime member consumers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&rsquo;t have to leave the house (49%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have more product options (45%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas non-Prime members said they shop online because they:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can avoid public spaces (43%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&rsquo;t have to leave the house (43%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-get-reviews-on-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see reviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from other customers (39%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#d0d0d0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<p><b>For Amazon sellers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you need to stay ahead of (and address) your customers&rsquo; complaints. Make sure you consistently deliver excellent customer service. <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-request-a-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/features\/alerts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maintaining<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> positive reviews for your product should always be a top priority.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><b>Online spending levels will likely remain the same after COVID-19<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime members reported shopping on Amazon more often than non-Prime members, both before the pandemic and during:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to COVID-19, 92% of Prime members said they shopped on Amazon unlike 70% of non_prime members.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Prime members&rsquo; shopping on Amazon during COVID-19 outpaced that of non-Prime members as well; 86% vs 50%.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for what shopping will look like post-pandemic, 78% Prime believe most shopping will take place online. 58% of non-Prime members agreed. But both are looking forward to getting back into physical store:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">62% of Prime members and 55% of non-Prime members<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But many more Prime members said they&rsquo;d be fine if they couldn&rsquo;t shop in a brick-and-mortar store again compared to non-Prime shoppers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51% of Prime members vs 24% of non-Prime members<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And after physical stores reopen, both Prime and non-Prime members say their online spending and their spending on Amazon will stay about the same:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime members: 44% for online spending and 48% for spending on Amazon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Prime members: 51% for online spending and 54% for spending on Amazon<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#d0d0d0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<p><b>For Amazon sellers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime members aren&rsquo;t going anywhere any time soon, and they&rsquo;re committed to spending their dollars on the site. Stay focused, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zYcd9iMqKvg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn what your buyers are looking for<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-product-listings-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep your listing optimized<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><b>Prime member or not, Amazon is the most popular online store<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Prime members shopped at these three stores most frequently before and during COVID-19:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Amazon: 89%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (92% before and 86% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Walmart: 52%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (58% before and 46% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Target: 39%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (46% before and 31% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25259 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-vs-non-prime-habits.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Prime members: graph of shopping frequency\" width=\"1600\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-vs-non-prime-habits.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-vs-non-prime-habits-300x112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-vs-non-prime-habits-1024x383.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/consumertrends-report-assets_prime-vs-non-prime-habits-1536x574.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the&nbsp; third most-frequented online store before COVID-19 changed for non-Prime members. Amazon still came in first, at 70%; Walmart was the second most popular at 48%; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-vs-ebay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eBay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rounded out the favorites at 31%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, during COVID-19, 19% of non-Prime members said they&rsquo;ve shopped at Target, edging out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-on-ebay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eBay<\/a> for third place. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/selling-on-walmart-vs-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon and Walmart<\/a> remained the number one and two choices when non-Prime customers shop online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the top 10 retail stores listed as possibilities, Prime members shopped at these three stores less frequently before and during COVID-19:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Etsy: 14% average<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (17% before and 10% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Wayfair: 14%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> average(18% before and 10% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Macy&rsquo;s: 16%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> average (21% before and 10% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And like Prime members&rsquo; less-frequented stores, non-Prime members shopped at Wayfair and Etsy less frequently than the other eight platforms both before and during the pandemic. Lowe&rsquo;s came in third:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Wayfair: 6% average<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (9% before and 3% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Etsy: 8%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> average(11% before and 5% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lowes: 9%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> average (13% before and 5% during)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#d0d0d0;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">\n<p><b>For Amazon sellers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you may want to consider expanding into other online stores, even though Amazon is still the safest bet when <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/how-to-sell-on-amazon-fba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setting up an e-commerce business<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>*Methodology<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, 2020, Jungle Scout conducted an anonymous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/consumer-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey of 1,006 U.S. consumers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
