It&rsquo;s not a new concept. The fact that women are paid less than men for the same work has been an issue since women entered the workforce.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are some jobs and businesses that don&rsquo;t financially discriminate against women, including <a href=\"https:\/\/sell.amazon.com\/brand-invite?ld=RPUSSOA-JungleScout-44147926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon entrepreneurship<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since selling on Amazon is one of those businesses that offers a level playing field for both genders, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/amazon-seller-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we took a closer look at traits of female Amazon sellers*<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine what these Amazon entrepreneurs have in common, like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half own a business outside of Amazon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly all women use FBA (93%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two-thirds use the private label <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-business-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business model<\/span><\/a> (65%)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over half reported bigger profits in 2019 (57%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#1 challenge: <a style=\"font-size: 1rem; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/how-to-get-reviews-on-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting reviews<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 44%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&rsquo;s dive deeper into the data.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female entrepreneurs on Amazon are educated<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Amazon sellers don&rsquo;t necessarily need a post-secondary education in order to succeed, 71% of women actively selling on the platform do have a college education.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, even though female entrepreneurs are well-educated, over half categorize their Amazon knowledge as average.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47% have a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">24% have an advanced degree (Master&rsquo;s or PhD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">56% see themselves as intermediate when it comes to knowing how to sell on Amazon<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are experienced Amazon sellers and entrepreneurs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While e-commerce is a first for nearly two-thirds of female sellers, almost half have been selling for three years or longer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, half of the women <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/how-to-sell-on-amazon-fba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selling on Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> own another company, in addition to their Amazon business.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65% said Amazon is their first experience as a web entrepreneur<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">48% have been selling on Amazon for 3+ yrs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49% own a business outside of Amazon<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most women started selling on Amazon for the flexibility it offers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for why female entrepreneurs decided to sell on Amazon, their number one reason is the flexibility it offers. And considering that 30% of women <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said they are a stay-at-home parent, on maternity leave, or working fewer than 40 hours per week outside the home, that makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming in a close second, a significant number of women said they started their Amazon businesses to replace (rather than supplement) their current income.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">48% flexibility to work from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/make-money-from-home-with-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anywhere\/travel<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44% way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/make-money-on-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replace income<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Take action&rdquo; and &ldquo;don&rsquo;t quit&rdquo; are the best pieces of advice female Amazon sellers have received<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jungle Scout team also reached out to our social media following to ask women sellers for the best advice they&rsquo;ve ever received when it comes to selling on Amazon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though many answers were unique, 25% of the women quoted &ldquo;don&rsquo;t quit&rdquo; and &ldquo;keep going&rdquo; as the most helpful words of wisdom given.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others mentioned the following useful tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Learn to use a spreadsheet. Work out the fees first. And get a product inspection. Every&hellip;single&hellip;time.&rdquo; &ndash; Sam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a brand, rather than [having] random products.&rdquo; &ndash; Liz<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Success means different thing[s] on Amazon. [There are] different ways to approach this biz.&rdquo; &ndash; Ming<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Educate but don&rsquo;t overwhelm yourself.&rdquo; &ndash; Mana<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of women sellers are expanding their product suite<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of the products they sell, a third of women stated they currently have 1-5 active listings on Amazon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, in 2020, over half of the women selling on Amazon said they plan to add more items to their present product catalog.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% have 1-5 products listed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51% plan to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/expand-your-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expand their brand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by adding new products<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, in 2020 finding new products to sell is women&rsquo;s number one focus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After product research, female sellers report listing optimization and inventory management as their second and third priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/potential-amazon-niches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding products to sell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 59%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/enhanced-brand-content-listing-optimization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimizing listings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 49%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/managing-amazon-inventory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing inventory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 46%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women say they&rsquo;re successful on Amazon because they have the time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the best bits of advice women have received, when it comes to the reason why someone is successful on Amazon, answers will vary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For female Amazon sellers, however, having the time to build and focus on their business is the top reason they&rsquo;re succeeding on the platform. Having drive and ambition, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the right tools and information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren&rsquo;t far behind.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have time to invest 34%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drive and ambition 32%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/products\/jungle-scout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/amazon-product-research-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 31%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, in order to succeed, they rely most heavily on their ability to analyze data and persevere<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for actual skill sets, female sellers on social media said that leaning into their ability to research and analyze data, as well as persevering when things get tough, are necessary in order to prosper on Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perseverance\/Persistence: 25%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research\/Analyzing data: 25%&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resourcefulness: 13%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other skills<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowledgeable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention to detail<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out-of-the-box thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selling on Amazon is still a part of women&rsquo;s e-commerce strategies for 2020 and beyond<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are still planning on selling on Amazon in 2020.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, as long as rising costs and competition don&rsquo;t make it impossible to turn a profit, virtually all women said they would continue selling on Amazon past 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">93% will sell on Amazon in 2020<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">91% will continue to sell on Amazon as long as it&rsquo;s profitable<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">72% wished they&rsquo;d started selling sooner<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, women think Amazon is a better platform for shoppers than it is for sellers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, just because they&rsquo;re going to continue selling on the site doesn&rsquo;t mean everyone is a fan. 45% of female sellers don&rsquo;t think Amazon is a good retail site for sellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">86% say Amazon is good for consumers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55% say Amazon is good for sellers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women say their sensitivity to a buyer&rsquo;s needs and emotions gives them an advantage on Amazon over men<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though a quarter of women said Amazon was an equalizer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/female-and-male-amazon-sellers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with respect to gender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the biggest advantage our social media followers said they had over men when selling on Amazon is understanding their customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to buyers&rsquo; needs\/emotions: 38%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention to detail: 25%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No advantages; all equal: 25%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They highlighted these advantages as well:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;I think we are more [detail-oriented] and understand our audience better. We are the main shoppers in most households.&rdquo; &ndash; Meeka<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Maybe we have less pressure to bring home the dough so we have more room for failure.&rdquo; &ndash; Ming<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Focus.&rdquo; &ndash; Marilou<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to disadvantages as a woman, though, most female Amazon sellers say there aren&rsquo;t any<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, 63% of women said everything is equal between men and women who sell on Amazon. Although, 13% of our social media respondents said they are at a disadvantage technologically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what some women had to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;As a [woman], I don&rsquo;t feel safe travelling to different part[s] of the world to do sourcing alone.&rdquo; &ndash; Ming<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;It&rsquo;s all men so it&rsquo;s hard to find like minded females to connect with and share ups and downs along with challenges of everyday life.&rdquo; &ndash; Meeka<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are undervalued.&rdquo; &ndash; Amanda<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;None.
