{"id":168063,"date":"2024-08-16T15:44:12","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T20:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/?post_type=article&#038;p=168063"},"modified":"2024-11-18T14:40:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T19:40:00","slug":"non-alcoholic-beer-amazon","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/resources\/articles\/non-alcoholic-beer-amazon\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Alcoholic Beer is Booming &amp; Two Craft Brands Have Cornered the Market on Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>I drank my first beer this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me clarify &mdash;&nbsp;I drank my first <em>non-alcoholic <\/em>beer this summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I do enjoy sipping on a nice lager as the weather heats up, I&rsquo;ve recently encountered a few scenarios where drinking a cold one sounded delicious, but the effects of the alcohol didn&rsquo;t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A barbecue before a long drive home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 10 a.m. haircut on a busy Saturday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mid-golf refreshment (the jury&rsquo;s still out on whether it would have mattered or not for my golf swing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn&rsquo;t only about making sensible choices. I wouldn&rsquo;t have snagged a non-alcoholic beer if it wasn&rsquo;t an option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The availability and &mdash; perhaps most importantly &mdash;&nbsp;quality of non-alcoholic beer has skyrocketed in recent years, leading to a surge in demand and an increasingly crowded market (especially on Amazon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we&rsquo;ll unpack the growing interest in non-alcoholic beers and explore which brands have brewed up the biggest revenue, sales, and market share on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading toc-show\">The &lsquo;sober curious&rsquo; movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/why-gen-z-is-drinking-less\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a> show that young adults are consuming less alcohol than those in previous generations. Given the wider cultural focus on physical and mental health (and alcohol&rsquo;s well-documented negative impact on both), an emphasis on living <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-sober-curious-4774971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sober<\/a> has emerged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s also worth examining alcohol consumption through a post-pandemic lens. A surge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10202895\/#:~:text=Consequently%2C%20alcohol%20sales%20too%20evolved,%2C%20%26%20Terrault%2C%202021).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lockdown-influenced drinking<\/a> led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10202895\/#:~:text=Consequently%2C%20alcohol%20sales%20too%20evolved,%2C%20%26%20Terrault%2C%202021).\">34% rise in alcohol sales early in the pandemic<\/a>. Balancing out that &ldquo;pandemic hangover&rdquo; by cutting back on booze feels like a natural reaction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&rsquo;ve seen it firsthand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my network, this past January felt like the &ldquo;driest&rdquo; to date, with more and more folks ringing in the new year on a sober note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from Google Trends confirms it. The search volume for &ldquo;dry January&rdquo; climbed significantly over the past five years.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_b6aa58cf04367b956b1c61a2096db927\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"1110\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That interest has translated to Amazon, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&rsquo;ll cover beer more specifically in the next sections, but look at this data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/features\/keyword-scout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jungle Scout Keyword Scout<\/a>. It shows searches on Amazon for &ldquo;non alcoholic drinks&rdquo; over the past two years.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_8127dac983710c952f0f399f641d95f7\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"1352\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notable spikes occur during time periods associated with heavier drinking &mdash; mid-summer and, of course, the holidays &mdash; but it&rsquo;s clear that interest is rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brewing-better-tasting-non-alcoholic-beer\">Brewing better-tasting non-alcoholic beer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Demand is one thing, but brands can&rsquo;t meet it without a compelling product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-alcoholic beer isn&rsquo;t brand new. O&rsquo;Doul&rsquo;s has been on liquor store shelves for decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/how-heineken-disrupted-the-staid-non-alcoholic-beer-industry\/652333\/\">Heineken<\/a> launched its own &ldquo;0.0&rdquo; beer, which is now one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/15-best-selling-non-alcoholic-111608302.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best-selling non-alcoholic beers<\/a> on the market (overall, not exclusively on Amazon). As part of the company&rsquo;s marketing plan to give away free samples during the pandemic, I ended up receiving two cases of Heineken 0.0 at a drive-in movie. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_d88009449d2086ca0a4e9b6bfdfcd839\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/61603041736__4887F0EA-5C79-41C8-95AB-563ED3A356A8-scaled-e1723840466681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1693\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn&rsquo;t impressed. It tasted watered down and wasn&rsquo;t nearly compelling enough to be considered a worthy alternative to other alcoholic beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, manufacturers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2023\/01\/18\/non-alcoholic-beers-taste-dry-january\/\">substantially improved<\/a> their brewing process &mdash;&nbsp;the details of which understandably remain a relative industry secret &mdash; and better-tasting non-alcoholic beer has come at the perfect time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading toc-show\" id=\"h-non-alcoholic-beer-on-amazon-the-top-brands\">Non-alcoholic beer on Amazon: The top brands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We already examined the steady rise in searches for &ldquo;non alcoholic drinks&rdquo; on Amazon. But searches for &ldquo;non alcoholic beer&rdquo; are even higher, and perhaps a bit less prone to the same seasonal volatility we saw in the previous graph.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_94c9ac863079c51d9c58e6c3e96d32ab\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"1348\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&rsquo;s take a look at which brands have capitalized on the surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We built a segment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/enterprise\/demo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jungle Scout Cobalt<\/a> by filtering for Amazon listings with &ldquo;non-alcoholic beer&rdquo; in the title.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_eaf74b29ae8ce05a0cc60a6b0a848664\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"642\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The graph below shows the top brands by market share based on unit sales over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_5b10d6fdd1c889c56d37ce8cfee9caf1\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-5-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"986\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the top 10 brands in this segment, Athletic Brewing Company (which we&rsquo;ll discuss in detail later) absolutely crushes with a 45% market share, followed by Go Brewing at 31%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s also notable that Heineken &mdash; which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fooddive.com\/news\/how-heineken-disrupted-the-staid-non-alcoholic-beer-industry\/652333\/\">dominates<\/a> <em>overall<\/em> (off-Amazon) sales for non-alcoholic beer (it posted $83.6 million in sales in 2022) &mdash; ranks so far behind craft NA beer brands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to the revenue data as well.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_6cdda7c56358837b9a192066bd9dd470\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-6-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"1196\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My theory? Massive, billion-dollar corporations like Coors, Budweiser, and Heineken simply don&rsquo;t prioritize Amazon as a platform. Savvy branding and alignment with its customers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Athletic Brewing concocted a great-tasting non-alcoholic beer. However, its marketing strategy and positioning have really made the brand stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its tagline&mdash;&ldquo;Fit for All Times&rdquo;&mdash;emphasizes the idea that non-alcoholic beer can be consumed anywhere: after the gym, at the office, or on the trail. True to its name, Athletic Brewing&rsquo;s savviest brand awareness move was sponsoring athletic events, such as 5Ks, marathons, and Ironmans.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mr-auto\" id=\"block_27c8db120cfe8ec6fa1bed607ee9d236\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/js-blog_the-rise-of-non-alcoholic-beer-8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1488\" height=\"1224\">\n        <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;That first summer on the market, I signed up to sponsor 70 athletic events,&rdquo; Sufelt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/fire-i-couldnt-possibly-turn-out-how-athletic-brewing-daniel-roth-yyzqe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told This is Working host Daniel Roth<\/a>. &ldquo;Most of it was just emailing race directors asking if I could show up for free with a cooler and hand out hundreds of beers at the finish line of their race.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further aligning with its adventure- and outdoors-minded target audience, the company is a certified B-Corp that gives back up to $2 million yearly to restore local trails.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Two for the Trails\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lwYMOxSA8B0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen class=\"embed-responsive-item\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its new Paceline Pedal IPA honors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rideclosertofree.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Closer to Free Ride<\/a>, an annual cycling based in Connecticut (where Athletic was founded) that benefits cancer research. An investment in Amazon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/AthleticBrewing\/page\/EA7729C1-6AFD-4629-9E17-49F22D8A82BE?ref_=ast_bln&amp;store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Athletic Brewing<\/a> recognizes Amazon&rsquo;s power. As the world reopened, they wanted to kick the drinking habits they developed during lockdown. What&rsquo;s even more impressive is the growth. Both of those products saw increases in revenue of over 400% year over year.
