Before you can create a listing for your new product on Amazon, there’s one crucial step you need to take care of — purchasing a UPC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it may sound a little intimidating to a new seller, the process is relatively simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this article, we’ll go over what a UPC is, why you need one, and where to purchase one that’s compliant with Amazon’s Terms of Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a UPC?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
UPC stands for Universal Product Code and is the barcode used to identify a particular retail product. When you look at nearly any product you purchase from a store, it will have a scannable barcode on the packaging. The unique 12-digit number underneath the barcode is the UPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When that barcode is scanned or entered into a search engine such as Amazon, the product connected to that code will appear in the store’s system or the Amazon search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading toc-show\">Do you need a UPC to sell products on Amazon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes and no — let me explain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need a UPC for your Amazon product because Amazon requires all new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-product-detail-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">product detail pages<\/a> to have a unique product identifier when they are created, such as a UPC, EAN, GTIN, and so on. All these are examples of a product identifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon wants to ensure that the brand name used to create the new listing matches the brand name linked to the UPC in the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.gs1us.org\/category\/1023\/identifiers?source=39180dd4-9569-4741-87de-11f600f0b79\">GS1 database<\/a>. GS1 is the global standard for product barcodes and is the company Amazon verifies your UPC with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the UPC does not match the information provided by GS1, Amazon will consider your UPC to be invalid and won’t let you list your product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In certain circumstances, Amazon allows sellers to list new products without a UPC or other product identifier in certain circumstances. We’ll go over this shortly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\">Does my UPC barcode need to be printed on my product packaging?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Amazon requires a UPC (or other product identifiers) to create a listing, technically, you don’t need to have the UPC barcode printed on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-product-packaging-inserts\/\">product packaging<\/a> to sell it on Amazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are sending your products into an Amazon fulfillment center using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/what-is-amazon-fba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FBA<\/a>, you will be required to label each product with an FNSKU barcode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FNSKU barcode is your “Amazon Barcode” and tells Amazon that the product you’re selling belongs to your seller account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading toc-show\">How to list a product on Amazon without a UPC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If, for whatever reason, your product does not have a UPC, you may apply for what’s called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-gtin-exemption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GTIN Exemption<\/a>. If approved, Amazon will allow you to list your product on Amazon without needing a UPC or other product identifier.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mx-auto\" id=\"block_291cf272e0921eb6d69132e7ade276f8\">\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/apply-for-gtin_UPC-e1642811207216.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"327\">\n <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading toc-show\">Where to buy a UPC for Amazon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When purchasing a UPC for your private label product, <strong><em>always<\/em><\/strong> buy them through <a href=\"https:\/\/my.gs1us.org\/product\/1367\/gs1-us-gtin?source=39180dd4-9569-4741-87de-11f600f0b79e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GS1<\/a>. GS1 is a non-profit global organization that maintains and manages authentic product barcodes for over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gs1.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two million companies<\/a> in 115 countries. <a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/help\/hub\/reference\/LE2KYT2UVPMTYGS?ref=ag_LE2KYT2UVPMTYGS_cont_200317470&locale=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon requires<\/a> all UPCs to be obtained from GS1 to ensure accuracy and legitimacy. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mx-auto\" id=\"block_a0a27774eb61d07dbfbb60deb6ed6235\">\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gs1-homepage_UPC-e1642811252474.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"380\">\n <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, Amazon sellers would purchase cheap UPCs from third-party websites, and even on eBay. The problem with doing this is that a seller is technically purchasing a UPC connected to a different brand\/product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Amazon finds that your UPC is inauthentic, they will remove your listing and may even suspend your ability to create new ASINs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not play around with this — always purchase your UPC or product identifier from GS1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\">How to buy a UPC from GS1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To purchase a UPC from <a href=\"https:\/\/my.gs1us.org\/category\/1023\/identifiers?source=39180dd4-9569-4741-87de-11f600f0b79\">GS1<\/a>, go to the website, and click on “Apply for a Barcode” in the top right. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mx-auto\" id=\"block_f698eae208ab664e8f6ed2a1509efe81\">\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/apply-for-barcode_UPC-e1642811300220.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"271\">\n <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, sellers had no other options but to purchase a minimum of 10 barcodes with an initial fee of $250 and an annual fee of $50. For most new Amazon sellers, that is nine too many. Plus, that was another high, upfront cost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you can purchase one single UPC from GS1 for just $30 and no annual fee. It’s a welcome option for businesses that are just getting started and launching one product at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After clicking on “Apply for a Barcode,” scroll down to the “Start Small with a GS1 US GTIN” section and click on “Get a GTIN.” <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mx-auto\" id=\"block_e5d6cb202c4c2b22a1e9c482cceb1b2f\">\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/start-small_UPC-e1642811344816.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"385\">\n <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill in the required information, and you will have your UPC ready for Amazon!<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wolf-block content-035-block image-block mx-auto\" id=\"block_0a48f86cf3233b39418d0cf1f95591e6\">\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gs1-buy_UPC-e1642811382133.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"307\">\n <\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\">What to do once you have your GS1 UPC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have your UPC, you can create your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-product-listings-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon listing<\/a>.
