After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/products\/jungle-scout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doing your homework<\/a>, you find the perfect product to sell on Amazon &mdash; it&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/potential-amazon-niches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in demand, and competition is low<\/a>. Its sales potential is almost limitless.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, after some additional research, you find out that you might not be able to sell it because it falls into one of Amazon&rsquo;s restricted categories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, even though it may require some additional work, it <em>is<\/em> possible to sell in one of Amazon&rsquo;s gated categories. In fact, according to respondents of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/amazon-seller-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Jungle Scout survey of more than 1,000 Amazon sellers<\/a>, 7% are successfully selling in gated categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restricted categories, however, <em>do<\/em> have rules and regulations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&rsquo;s go over what we need to know about category and product restrictions on Amazon, gated categories, and how to get ungated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading toc-show\" id=\"h-what-are-amazon-s-product-compliance-and-safety-regulations\">What are Amazon&rsquo;s product compliance and safety regulations?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/help.html?itemID=GUH6FA4XSJ2LZFLY&amp;language=en-US&amp;ref=efph_GUH6FA4XSJ2LZFLY_cont_521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon&rsquo;s compliance and safety regulations<\/a>, there are two sets of rules we need to follow: those for restricted categories, and those for restricted categories products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-categories-requiring-amazon-approval\">Categories requiring Amazon-approval<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the regulations for Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/G200333160?language=en_US&amp;ref=ag_G200333160_cont_G200301050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gated categories<\/a> are different from one to the next, Amazon has no single set of determining factors with respect to whether or not you can list within a specific category without having to provide additional information for approval.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if you do require Amazon&rsquo;s okay before selling in a particular category, the approval process may mean paying additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-fba-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fees<\/a>, submitting to performance checks, and any other actions Amazon deems necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-categories-are-gated-on-amazon-nbsp\">What categories are gated on Amazon?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we mentioned earlier, Amazon is moving away from applying restrictions in the broader categories. Instead, it&rsquo;s restricting entry for sub-category niches. Blu-ray<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/gp\/help\/help.html?itemID=200316090&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref=ag_200316090_cont_G200333160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watches<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/help\/hub\/reference\/GR7X85TSR4YR6RY9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sony PlayStation Requirements in Video Games<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wolf-block wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-sell-in-restricted-categories\">How to sell in restricted categories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No two Amazon-restricted categories have the same method of getting ungated, and some are much easier to sell in than others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a short how-to guide for some of Amazon&rsquo;s gated categories* according to Amazon itself, sources around the web, and my own experience.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Collectible Coins<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collectible coins are rare and special edition minted coins targeted at collectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon says:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless 100% of the seller&rsquo;s products are from a legally recognized government mint and comply with the additional product requirements, or 100% of the seller&rsquo;s items are graded by the approved graders and comply with the additional product requirements then the seller must maintain membership in one of the following organizations:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PNG &ndash; Professional Numismatist Guild<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICTA &ndash; Industry Council for Tangible Assets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCGS &ndash; Professional Coin Grading Service<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGC\/PMG &ndash; Numismatic Grading Corporation\/Paper Money Guarantee<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% or more of the seller&rsquo;s inventory must be graded by NGC or PCGS, or be from a legally recognized government mint.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the seller qualifies as a dealer of precious metals, precious stones, or jewels under 31 C.F.R. Part 1027, seller has implemented an anti-money laundering program in compliance with Federal Regulation 31 C.F.R. &sect; 1027.210, and will, upon Amazon&rsquo;s request, provide copies of the seller&rsquo;s anti-money laundering program to Amazon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionally graded \/ authenticated coins are only acceptable from NGC or PCGS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All coins listed at or above $1,500 must be graded by PCGS or NGC, or they will not be allowed in the store.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ungraded coins must be listed as Graded by the seller unless they are in original government packaging and can be listed accordingly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Unsearched&rdquo; bags, rolls, tubes, jars, or any other unknown bulk coins sales are not allowed. The detail page must clearly identify to the customer the specific coins they are purchasing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers should also provide a link to their company website where we can view the products which they wish to sell.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Amazon is no longer accepting new Seller applications for this category. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Entertainment Collectibles<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other collectibles, entertainment collectibles are products related to film or television that are signed, special edition, or possess some other quality that would raise the value of the product for collectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon says:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers must remain on the Professional Seller plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers must maintain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/help\/hub\/reference\/G200285250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seller performance metrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aka Customer Metrics) at or below Amazon&rsquo;s required levels:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Order defect rate (ODR) must be less than 1%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-fulfillment cancellation rate must be less than 2.5%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late shipment rate must be less than 4%.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers must comply with all listing requirements for items sold in the Entertainment Collectibles category.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers must be able to complete all aspects of ordering and purchasing a product using only the Amazon website.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other sellers say that entertainment collectibles is one of the easier-to-get-into restricted categories. And i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n terms of the application process for Entertainment Collectibles, sellers are required to send an email to <\/span><a href=\"mailto:collectibles-application@amazon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collectibles-application@amazon.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it&rsquo;s not possible to apply online<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Fine Art<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fine art are one-of-a-kind pieces and not mass produced. Some of these pieces sell for as much as $10,000 or more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon says:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers must be in [the business of selling fine art] for a minimum of three years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They must have &ldquo;significant online presence through a proprietary or third-party site (examples: 1st Dibs, Artsy, and artnet).&rdquo;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers must have &ldquo;application of a curatorial element to your gallery selection through yearly exhibition schedules, published essays, or exhibition catalogs.&rdquo;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seller evaluations are also based on, but not limited to, the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participation in an international, vetted art fair (examples: Frieze, Affordable Art Fair, Pulse, and Scope)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membership in a recognized art organization (examples: Art Dealers Association of America, New Art Dealers Alliance, and Private Art Dealers Association)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caliber of the gallery&rsquo;s review process for selecting artists and work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity of artists<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon does not accept the following sellers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artists representing their own work, or galleries or collaborations of artists that sell their works directly (without curation) to the public<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galleries or businesses that provide mass-produced artwork<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prints in limited editions over 400<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals selling estate contents or personal inventory<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For mass-produced art, Home &amp; Kitchen has sub-categories for those listings.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Jewelry<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fine jewelry category includes jewelry products that are authenticated and meet <a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/help\/hub\/reference\/G201269180\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon&rsquo;s Jewelry Quality Assurance Standards<\/a>. Like Fine Art, fine jewelry pieces sell for much higher prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon says:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products must be sold as listed and as characterized in the descriptions, images, and specifications shown on the detail page.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All products must meet Amazon&rsquo;s Jewelry Quality Assurance Standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Items must be properly set up according to Amazon&rsquo;s Categorization of <a href=\"https:\/\/sellercentral.amazon.com\/help\/hub\/reference\/G201450260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fine vs. Fashion Jewelry guidelines<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All products must be authentic (ie. no knock-offs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listing of items over $300,000 is not allowed in the Jewelry category.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must have the professional seller plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers applying to list Fine Jewelry must be existing Amazon.com sellers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sellers must meet these performance criteria to be eligible to apply to sell in the Jewelry category:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Order-Defect Rate of 1% or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancellation Rate of 2.5% or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late Shipment Rate of 4% or less<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other sellers say that &lsquo;Fine Jewelry&rsquo; is the strictest of all the Amazon restricted categories. Like &lsquo;Fine Art,&rsquo; this is a category just for experts.
